NAB again raids house of KMC former DG Parks Liaquat Qaimkhani
KARACHI (92 news) – The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) once again raided the house of former Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) DG Liaquat Qaimkhani in Karachi on Tuesday.
During the raid, the anti-graft watchdog body team searched various rooms of the house and took several important documents in their custody.
The raid follows after the initial interrogation from Qaimkhani by the NAB, sources said and added that another locker, which was recovered in last raid, will be opened with the help of his brother.
The former DG parks is currently in NAB’s custody for 14 days in a fake bank accounts case.
Earlier, KMC former DG Parks Liaquat Qaimkhani was remanded into NAB custody for 14 days. The NAB has presented former director general of parks and horticulture in Karachi before accountability court in fake bank accounts case.
During the proceedings headed by judge Mohammad Bashir, the anti-corruption watchdog has requested to extend physical remand of Qaimkhani for further interrogation.
The NAB prosecutor stated that the accused misused his authority for illegally allotment. However, the court approved the physical remand of Liaquat Qaimkhani for 14 days.
Earlier on September 19, the NAB had recovered a huge cache of wealth, including costly and luxury vehicles, bonds, documents of properties, diamond and gold ornaments, from the palace-like house of Liaquat Ali Qaimkhani, Adviser to Karachi Mayor on Parks.
The NAB authorities also seized the official record of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC). The list of 200 costly items includes eight luxury vehicles, 171 tolas of gold ornaments, modern weapons, documents of bungalows in Lahore and Karachi.
Moreover, about two lockers measuring four-six feet have also been recovered which could not be opened so far.
In addition, local and foreign currency worth millions of rupees has been recovered. The foreign currency includes Saudi riyal, Singapore dollar, UAE dhirams and US dollars.
On the other hand, an accountability court has approved three-day transit remand of former DG Parks Liaquat Qaimkhani.
To a question by a journalist about his luxurious lifestyle despite having Rs1.5 million annual salary, Liaquat Qaimkhani said that he belonged to an agrarian family. However, he did not respond to the question about his lockers.
He has been arrested in the Baharia Icon case and he faces the charge of awarding fake contracts as DG Parks.
According to sources, Liaquat Ali Qaimkhani was appointed as gardener in KMC. Then Karachi Nazim Naimatullah had specially created the post of DG Parks and appointed him.
The sources said that then Minister for Local Government Waseem Akhtar had opposed the appointment of Liaquat Ali as DG Parks. He had also written a letter to the Anti-Corruption Establishment over the violation of laws.
Meanwhile, Liaquat Ali established relations with an important figure of Sindh and continued to work as DG Parks for a long time. He was assigned the task of decoration of Benazir Bhutto Park on the basis of these relations.
Sources said that Liaquat Ali’s influence remained intact at the time of his retirement. He used the official resources for decorating his house. He also secured jobs for his favourite persons
Currently he was working as adviser to Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar who is on a visit to Dubai. On his return, Waseem Akhtar is likely to be questioned what had been done under him.
