NAB moves SC for cancellations of Maryam’s bail

NAB moves SC for cancellations of Maryam’s bail
December 6, 2019
ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) moved a plea in the Supreme Court (SC) seeking cancellation the bail of Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) vice president Maryam Nawaz in Chaudhry Sugar Mills case. The corruption watchdog body has filed an appeal against the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) verdict regarding bail of Maryam Nawaz in the top court. In the petition, the bureau adopted a stance that the LHC verdict on the matter of Maryam was against the SC’s orders. It also stated that the observations on evidence given by the LHC can affect the trial of bail case. The NAB further pleaded to the court to declare LHC’s October 31 verdict as null and void. Earlier on November 4, the LHC approved the bail of Maryam Nawaz in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case. The decision to grant bail was announced by a two-member bench headed by Justice Ali Baqir. The court attached the conditions on bail of Maryam Nawaz. The court has ordered that the defendant deposit two surety bonds for Rs10 million each for the bail, 70 million on behalf of bail guarantee and her passport to be also submitted in the court. Justice Baqir Ali Najfi announced the verdict granting bail to Maryam Nawaz so that she can look after her ailing father, Nawaz Sharif. It is pertinent to mention here that the LHC had reserved the ruling on Oct 31 over her plea. On August 8, the anti-graft watchdog body had taken Maryam Nawaz into custody over her alleged involvement in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case. The Sharif family has been accused of using Chaudhry Sugar Mills for money-laundering and illegal transfer of its shares. According to NAB, the family took a $15 million loan on the pretext to set up the mill despite the fact that it had already been established before the loan was acquired.
