NAB transforms bulletproof vehicle inquiry into investigation: sources

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi again in hot water as the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) decided to transform bulletproof vehicle case inquiry into the investigation. According to the sources, the approval was given in an anti-graft watchdog body’s executive board meeting chaired by Chairman Justice (rtd) Javed Iqbal, at the bureau’s headquarters. During the meeting, the corruption watchdog body said that the foremost priority of the bureau to take the mega corruption cases into logical end. He said corruption is the root cause of all evils and is a hurdle in the development of the country. Meanwhile, the statements of officials from foreign ministry and establishment division have already been recorded in the case, whereas Nawaz Sharif, Khaqan Abbasi and Fawad Hasan Fawad’s statements were also recorded. In the earlier month, a team of the NAB had recorded the statement of Nawaz Sharif in connection with the investigation into alleged personal use of bulletproof vehicles imported for the SAARC summit 2016. The NAB stated before the court that 34 bulletproof vehicles were procured from Germany for the guest of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) conference. The vehicles were bought without paying import duty, it added.

Earlier, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) opened a new case of bulletproof cars import against former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

The anti-graft watchdog body summoned Khaqan Abbasi and Nawaz Sharif for investigation into alleged importing of 34 bulletproof cars from Germany without payment of customs duty on any of them.

Former PM Abbasi appeared before National the NAB in case pertaining to liquefied natural gas (LNG) import scam, where he was given a notice of summoning in the new probe of bulletproof cars. Notice sent to Abbasi states that the cars were imported ahead of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit 2016, and were to be used by diplomats. The notice requires response from Abbasi that why were the cars used for the protocol of Sharif family.
