IHC adjourns Nawaz Sharif’s bail plea on medical grounds for two weeks, issues notice to NAB

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday the application of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who is serving seven-year term in the Al-Azizia reference, for bail on medical grounds for two weeks, issuing notice to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). The two-member bench comprising of Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani heard the petition. The court also issued notice to the Kot Lakhpat Jail superintendent. Khawaja Haris, counsel for Nawaz Sharif, said that Nawaz Sharif is suffering from multiple diseases. In the petition, it had been stated that Nawaz Sharif is suffering from multiple diseases which could jeopardize his health. The tests conducted during his six-week bail are also showing his disease life-threatening, it states. “Nawaz Sharif is suffering from heart arteries ailment. He should be treated by the doctors who had already treated him abroad,” it added. The petition states that Nawaz’s political opponents are propagating that his treatment abroad is an attempt to get an NRO. It prayed to court to allow Nawaz Sharif to get treatment abroad. Meanwhile, the court will also hear the plea of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against the acquittal of Nawaz Sharif in the Flagship reference today.
Nawaz Sharif returns to jail after expiry of bail period
On May 8, Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif returned to Kot Lakhpat jail after 12pm, following the expiry of his six-week bail in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference. The former premier left for jail from his residence at 8:50pm. Nawaz Sharif was accompanied by his daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif. A large number of PML-N workers and leaders were also present on this occasion. Nawaz’s daughter Maryam and nephew Hamza Shehbaz, along with Mohammad Zubair, Talal Chaudhry and other party leaders, have been accompanying the former prime minister. SC rejects Nawaz Sharif’s review petition for bail extension
On May 3, the Supreme Court (SC) had rejected former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s review petition seeking extension in the bail. A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and also comprising Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and Justice Yahya Afridi heard the case. During the hearing, Sharif’s consul Khawaja Haris said his client can’t apply for bail before surrendering himself to the authorities. To reply, Justice Sajjad Ali said that whatever said prior to signing the order was just an observation. The lawyer asked the court to extend the bail for eight more weeks as the only option available for his client is to be checked by the same doctors who were treating him earlier in London. The chief justice remarked that Nawaz’s health has deteriorated after going on bail.
