NDMA cleans 35 out of 42 choking points of three big nullahs in Karachi

KARACHI (92 News) - The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) with the help of Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) has cleaned 35 out of 42 choking points of three big nullahs. The NDMA has been working with the FWO to clear the drains. So far, it has made headway on three major drains–the Gujjar Nullah, Mawach Goth Nullah and Korangi Nullah. So far, 80% of the Gujjar Nullah has been cleaned, 75% of the Mawach Goth Nullah and 85% of the Korangi Nullah. Fourteen FWO teams have been working to remove garbage from the drains. The NDMA spokesperson said on Wednesday the teams removed over 6,000 tonnes of garbage. Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) has so far cleared 35 blocked points from out of a total of 42, which hindered the smooth flow of water in three main nullahs. Of Karachi’s 38 drains, 19 are the responsibility of the Sindh government now. Over 20,000 tonnes of sludge has so far been lifted from three storm water drains of Karachi as desilting and dredging operation of nullahs continued in metropolitan city on third consecutive day. 10,000 tonnes of solid waste was lifted from storm water channels the other day. FWO has been tasked to complete the cleansing operation of three mullahs by August 8. Chairman NDMA Lt Gen Muhammad Afzal is in constant touch with FWO and others.
