KARACHI (92 News) – Under instructions from Prime Minister Imran Khan, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has started the Mission Clean Karachi with heavy machinery. The FWO teams are busy cleaning Gujjar Nullah, while over 100 dumpers and machinery are cleaning the drains in Central District. Garbage is being shifted to landfill site. Moreover, Rangers teams are also present to provide security to the teams engaged in the cleanliness operation. The cleanliness operation – one of the biggest problems of the city – has been launched after the visit of NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Muhammad Afzal. People residing around Gujjar Nullah said that the biggest problems of the Karachiites will be resolved after the cleanliness drive. Citizens had to face problems due to poor sanitation during the monsoon spell. All the streets were inundated by dirty water. During his visit on Sunday, NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Muhammad Afzal said that the main reason behind the sewerage problems is encroachments on drains. He said that the prime minister had asked him to visit Karachi to review the situation in Karachi. “Water in a majority of areas had subsided when I reached here,” he added. Lt Gen Muhammad Afzal said that the sewage problem cannot be resolved without long-term planning. “More rain is expected in August 7. The rain system will remain in the city during August24-26. We will move towards the resolution of the problem from the mid of September,” he added.
