Nepra sends show cause notice to K-Electric

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has issued a show-cause notice to K-Electric, blaming it for unannounced power outages in Karachi. According to a statement issued by the Nepra, the regularity body, in light of the findings of the investigation committee, has decided to proceed further and issued a show-cause notice to K-Electric. “Nepra investigation committee constituted to conduct investigations in the matter of excessive load shedding in Karachi has submitted its report to the authority,” read the statement. Earlier on July 10, the Nepra heard the issue of prolonged electricity loadshedding. The Nepra chairman assured that he would take a decision after reviewing all the facts and suggestions. He also hinted at abolishing pack and off-pack tariffs till the end of loadshedding. He also sought other details including distribution and production of K-Electric. During the hearing, K-Electric CEO Syed Moonis Abdullah Alvi has told that work is being done on power transmission system. “30 to 40 feeders are shut due to the restoration process,” he added.
Karachi power outages to increase
On the other hand, the residents of Karachi will have to once again bear long hours of power outages as K-Electric announced a shortage of 150 megawatts of electricity. According to the company, it is facing a power shortage from two of its independent power producers–Tapal and Gul Ahmed. It has warned people that due to this, the hours of load shedding in the city will increase. “Things will get better as soon as power is released from the IPPs,” the K-Electric spokesperson said.
