New Zealand beat Afghanistan by six wickets, Vettori takes 300th wicket
NAPIER - New Zealand's Daniel Vettori moved into an elite club of bowlers by taking his 300th one-day international wicket on Sunday as the Kiwis beat Afghanistan by six wickets in their World at McLean Park.
Earlier, the co-hosts dismissed Afghanistan for 186.
Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi had chosen to bat on a wicket considered the best batting surface in New Zealand but they were in immediate trouble with Vettori's early breakthrough and never really recovered.
Trent Boult had Javed Ahmadi trapped lbw for one and Asghar Stanikzai steering the ball to Martin Guptill at point for nine to leave Nabi's side floundering at 24 for three.
Mangal and Samiullah Shenwari managed to see off the opening bowlers before Vettori struck again.
The left-arm spinner then had Nabi caught by Ross Taylor for six and trapped Asfar Zazai lbw on the next delivery, though Najibullah Zadran survived the hat-trick ball, despite the attention of nine fielders around the bat.
Najibullah (56) and Shenwari then combined for an 86-run partnership before Najibullah was caught by Vettori at third man in the penultimate over of the batting power-play.
Shenwari did well to farm the majority of the strike with the tail but was caught for 54 in the 46th over, leaving his side 166 for nine before last pair Hamid Hassan (16) and Zapoor Zadran (two not out) added 20 runs.
In response, the Kiwis chased the meager total in 37 overs.
The 36-year-old bowled Usman Ghani on his first delivery in the third over, then took Nawroz Mangal's (27) wicket in the 16th over for No. 300.
Vettori became the 12th man to achieve the milestone and the ninth to take more than 300 wickets in both tests and ODIs. He later took two wickets in successive deliveries but missed the hat-trick and finished with 4-18. - Reuters
