NAPIER (Web Desk) New Zealand secured a comfortable 73-run victory over Pakistan in the first ODI at McLean Park on Friday.
Batting first, the Kiwis posted an imposing total of 344/9, with Mark Chapman leading the charge with a brilliant 132 runs. Daryl Mitchell contributed 76, while debutant Mohammad Abbas provided a late cameo, scoring 52 off 26 balls.
Pakistan’s chase got off to a solid start, with openers Usman Khan (39) and Abdullah Shafique (36) putting on 83 for the first wicket.
However, the middle order faltered, and despite a composed 78 from Babar Azam, Pakistan were bowled out for 271 in 44.1 overs.
Nathan Smith was the standout bowler for New Zealand, claiming 4 wickets for 60 runs, while Jacob Duffy and William O’Rourke also contributed to Pakistan’s downfall.
Pakistan’s defeat came after an early collapse of their top order, and despite a late fight from Salman Agha (58), they fell short of the target.
The second ODI will be played on Sunday at the same venue.
