No proposal to impose Rs190bn taxes, Asad Umar refutes news reports

RAWALPINDI (92 News) – Refuting the news reports, Minister for Finance Asad Umar said that there was no proposal to impose new taxes amounting to Rs190 billion. Addressing the Second All Pakistan Women Chambers Presidents' Summit, the minister said that the government had categorically stated if the IMF’s program was good for the country then it would be negotiated, else there were other options. Asad Umar also informed that the government was reviewing to bring a supplementary finance bill to legislate the recommendations presented by five sub-committees of the Economic Advisory Council and approved by the Prime Minister Imran Khan. The finance minister has said that the government is working on enhancing tax base in the country through a comprehensive package for tax reforms. He also said there is no shortage of electricity in the country and unfounded and baseless criticism in this regard should be avoided. Asad Umar said 12.5 percent increase in remittances has been recorded in the current fiscal year. “More remittances of nearly one billion dollar were received. The government had announced more incentives for the senders and the banks to increase remittances,” he added. The minister said all out support from the government would be provided for the planned launch of Islamic Sukook which aims to generate sufficient finances to ease out liquidity of the power sector. He said a consortium of Islamic Banks has been assigned the task to coordinate with the Government and facilitate it for the launch.
