Notification issued for appointment of Justice Gulzar Ahmed as CJP

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The Law Ministry has issued a notification for appointment of Justice Gulzar Ahmed as Chief Justice of Pakistan. President Dr Arif Alvi had approved the appointment under Article 177 and 175 of the Constitution. “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (3) of Article 175 A read with Article 177 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the President is pleased to appoint Mr. Justice Gulzar Ahmed, the most Senior Judge of Supreme Court, as Chief Justice of Pakistan with effect from 21.12.2019,” read the notification. He will assume the charge of his office after the retirement of Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa on December 20. After taking the oath, Justice Gulzar will serve until February 1, 2022. On Friday the Law Ministry had forwarded a summary to the Prime Minister’s Office for the appointment of Justice Gulzar Ahmed as the Chief Justice of Pakistan. Justice Gulzar was born in Karachi on February 2, 1957. After completing his education in law, he pursued his career as a lawyer and initially served at the Sindh High Court (SHC) in 1986. In 1988, he was elevated to the Supreme Court of Pakistan as an advocate. Justice Gulzar was sworn in as Sindh High Court judge on August 27, 2002, and became the apex court’s judge on November 16, 2011. He has been part of benches deciding high-profile cases and has authored many landmark judgments. Justice Gulzar was also part of the bench which heard the famous Panama case and disqualified the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif in a historic judgment.
