Opposition, government accuse each other of Karachi deaths

ISLAMABAD (92 News) - The federal government and Opposition in the National assembly kept putting the onus of 800 plus deaths in Karachi on each other, while dozens more died on the fifth day of intense heat in Karachi on Wednesday. Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah lashed out at the federal government on Wednesday, blaming them for power outages in the country as the death toll kept increasing and reached almost 830 in four days. In an emotional speech centred on the overwhelming loss of life in Karachi, Shah spoke after Minister for Water and Power Khwaja Asif had furnished the House with details of power supply and shortages. "The people are dying of load-shedding in hot weather while the ministers have opened their books and are giving figures," he said. "Countries do not strengthen by blame games." In response, Federal Minister for water and power Khwaja Asif said that the Sindh government is responsible for the deaths. He said that the opposition must not give Constitution and federation references to blame the federal government. More than 800 people have died in five days of intense heat and lack of water and electricity in Karachi. Morgues are running short on preserving the corpses in the metropolis, with people facing difficulty in performing the ritual bathing of the dead before burying them.
