Pak Army rescues 22 LUMS students stuck in snow-hit GB district

RAWALPINDI (92 News) – Pakistan Army on Monday rescued 22 students of Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) stranded in snow-hit Rattu in Gilgit to Rawalpindi. According to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), 22 LUMS students who had gone to Gilgit for skiing were stuck in heavy snow and landslide for the last five days. Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa had directed for their immediate heli-lifting after LUMS administration approached Army for help. All students including 13 boys and nine girls have reached Rawalpindi and on the way to their homes.

The death toll due to landslides after heavy rain and snowfall has increased to 104 across the country. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), as many as 77 people were killed due to landslide and avalanches in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. In Balochistan, 20 people killed and 236 houses were damaged due to snowfall. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, five people were killed, while two people died in Gilgit-Baltistan. .Several link roads have been affected in Blaochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. The NDMA spokesman said that they were in complete contact with all departments concerned. “Field teams are working to provide a relief to the affected people,” he said. He said that 2,000 tents, 1250 blankets and 2,250 items have been transported to the affected areas. Meanwhile, Pakistan Army is continuing its rescue and relief operation in rain and snow-hit areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Balochistan. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Pakistan Army’s rescue and relief operations are underway in the affected areas of Neelam Valley, Gilgit and Balochistan.
