PESHAWAR (92 News) The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) health authorities have confirmed the second case of monkeypox (mpox) in a five-month-old child, who recently travelled from Qatar to Peshawar with her parents, at the Bacha Khan International Airport.
According to Adviser to the KP Chief Minister on Health Ehtesham Ali, the Public Health Reference Lab confirmed the presence of the mpox virus in the infant, after which the Health Department immediately began screening the child’s parents to ensure their health and safety.
Authorities have further requested to provide details of the passengers who were seated near the patient for further surveillance and monitoring.
It should be noted here that the first mpox case of 2025 was reported on January 25 at Peshawar airport when a passenger arriving from the Gulf was detected with the infection, bringing the total number of mpox cases in KP to 11 since the outbreak, with two cases in 2023, seven in 2024, and now two in 2025.
Globally, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recently declared Mpox a public health emergency. The virus has now spread to 121 countries, with 500 deaths reported so far, particularly affecting people with weak immune systems.
