ISLAMABAD (92 News) Pakistan has partnered with South Korea to launch a state-of-the-art Seed Potato Production and Aeroponics Complex aimed at improving the country’s potato production.
The initiative, supported by the Korea Partnership for Innovation in Agriculture (KOPIA) and the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC), was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday.
The project, located at the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) in Islamabad, introduces advanced aeroponics technology, which allows potatoes to be cultivated in an air or mist environment without the use of soil.
This method promises higher yields with minimal water use and is expected to significantly reduce Pakistan’s reliance on imported seed potatoes.
Prime Minister Sharif expressed confidence that the project would provide farmers with high-quality, locally produced seed potatoes, which will help boost productivity and cut costs.
The move is also anticipated to reduce Pakistan's annual import of 6,000 to 12,000 tonnes of potato seeds and contribute to the country’s self-sufficiency.
The complex includes four aeroponic greenhouses, 35 screen houses, a cold storage facility, and a solar power system.
KOPIA’s support, along with the expertise of Korean agricultural research, is expected to transform Pakistan’s potato industry and strengthen agricultural practices across the country.
