Panama Case: FBR chief says Maryam Nawaz denied property ownership abroad

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The Supreme Court (SC) has on Tuesday resumed the hearing of Panama case after a break of three days. The five-member larger bench of the Supreme Court headed Justice Asif Saeed Khosa is hearing the case on daily basis. Other bench members are Justice Ejaz Afzal, Justice Gulzar Ahmed, Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan. During the proceedings, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry and Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman Dr Mohammad Irshad appeared before the apex court to present relevant record regarding the alleged money laundering of Sharif family. Justice Gulzar remarked that it looks like the FBR requires 30 years for the attestation of record, while Justice Khosa said that NAB chairman is repeating things mentioned in the letters of the Qatari prince. FBR chairman told the court that Panama is a tax heaven and they were trying to contact through foreign ministry to which Justice Azmat Saeed remarked that it took six months for the FBR to contact foreign ministry. He congratulated the FBR chairman for covering 200 yards distance in six months and said it will take 30 years for the attestation of record. The FBR chairman said that the Bureau had sent a notice to Maryam Nawaz to which she replied that she did not have any property abroad but she did not mention being trustee to any property either. Meanwhile Hussain Nawaz replied that he had been living abroad since 2000. In his statement NAB chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry said that Bureau only acts when a regulator approaches for it. The NAB chairman assured the court that the Bureau would carry out action according to the law. Justice Khosa inquired about NAB’s actions regarding bank accounts and monetary transactions to which the chairman assured the court that investigation will be undertaken. The court adjourned the hearing till Wednesday (tomorrow).
