Panamagate Case Verdict: Nawaz Sharif files review petition

Panamagate Case Verdict: Nawaz Sharif files review petition
August 15, 2017
ISLAMABAD (92 News) –A review petition has been filed in the Supreme Court over the Panamagate case judgment on Tuesday. The petition was filed by Khawaja Haris, the counsel of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif pleading the court to review the Panamagate case judgment. The petition consists of 34 pages. The apex court had on July 28 disqualified Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from public office over long-running corruption allegations, a decision that ousts him from the premiership for the third time. The allegations against the prime minister spiraled from the Panama Papers leak last year, which sparked a media frenzy over details of the lavish lifestyles and luxury London property portfolio of the Sharif dynasty. The Supreme Court employed little-used Article 62 of the Constitution, which calls for the dismissal of any lawmaker deemed dishonest, to dismiss Sharif. His allies believe the verdict smacks of judicial overreach. Others say privately elements of the military had a hand in the process. The court cited the UAE allegations in its ruling Friday, declaring they indicated Sharif was “not honest” as it brought his tenure to an unceremonious end. General elections are scheduled for next year, but Sharif now falls short of becoming the first premier to complete a full five-year term.
