PM favours Article 140A’s full implementation to address problems of Karachi

ISLAMABAD (92 News) - Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has said that the federal government is in favour of full implementation of Article 140A of the Constitution to address the longstanding problems of Karachi. The prime minister has directed the attorney general Pakistan (AGP) to request the Supreme Court (SC) for an early hearing and disposal of the petition pending before the august court regarding Article 140A. In a statement, he said the longstanding problems of Karachi cannot be solved unless the elected local government representatives become financially, politically and administratively autonomous in the spirit of the Constitution. It is worth mentioning here that Article 140 A of the Constitution states that each province shall, by law, establish a local government system and devolve political, administrative and financial responsibility, and authority to the elected representatives of the local governments.
Sindh governor to meet PM today
The premier Khan has summoned the governors of Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) in Islamabad to hold separate meetings today. He summoned the Sindh governor Imran Ismail in Islamabad today to discussed the important issues of Karachi and ongoing projects of the federal government. They will also hold discussions over the important matters including the situation of Karachi. Imran Khan and Imran Ismail are likely to hold consultation for the provision of relief to the Karachiites facing terrible situation due to load shedding and power shutdowns by K-Electric. Moreover, they will also discuss the implementation of Article 140-A of the Constitution and issues to the local government. The Sindh governor will apprise the premier regarding the damages caused by the heavy rainfall in Karachi.
