PM Imran Khan says lockdown will only slow down, not end coronavirus

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the lockdown will only slow down the coronavirus, not end it. Talking to the media after chairing a meeting to review coronavirus situation on Friday, he clarified that the people will have to live with it. “We know that the coronavirs cases will increase in Pakistan in the coming days, but we also have to protect our people from hunger,” he added. He also appealed to the provinces to resume public transport because the poor people are facing a difficult time. “Transport has been resumed in the countries where much more deaths have been reported,” he added. PM Imran Khan said that the medical staff around the world is fighting against the disease like their peers in Pakistan. “Despite our limited resources, we gave a stimulus package of US$8 billion to its people, whereas the US allocated US$2,200 billion and Japan US$1,000 billion for this purpose,” he added. He said that all businesses will be opened gradually under the SOPs. “In Wuhan and South Korea, coronavirus has returned after disappearance. We cannot continuously clamp the lockdown which ended the business of 25 million people,” he added. The prime minister lauded the steps taken by the government to combat coronavirus. Earlier addressing the meeting, the prime minister said that effective domestic revenue mobilization, better fiscal and debt management, reforms in energy sector and financial sector and improving investment climate in the country were key priorities of the present government. While appreciating G-20 debt relief initiative, he observed that the G-20 relief was a timely initiative that complemented the efforts to cope with the challenge of COVID-19. He, however, urged that that the facility may be further extended to provide greater space to the developing countries fighting the pandemic to concentrate their resources in providing relief to their people. The prime minister also directed to explore opportunities for debt for development swaps so that the process of socio-economic development could be stimulated. He appreciated international community for their positive response in wake of corona pandemic. The meeting was also attended by Minister for Economic Affair Division Makhdoom Khusru Bakhtiar, Secretary EAD Noor Ahmed and senior officials.
