PM terms forest area of KP increased by 4 per cent
ISLAMABAD (92 News) – Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan said on Sunday that the forest area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) had increased by 4 per cent, contributing to the fight against climate change.
In his tweet Imran Khan said that the success of the Billion Tree Tsunami gave the government confidence to take the 10 billion trees initiative.
“From nurseries to full forest areas, the success of Billion Tree Tsunami has been unprecedented with public & pvt involvement. Has given us confidence to take the initiative to 10 bn trees. KP's forest cover has increased by 4%, contributing to the fight against climate change,” the PM Khan tweeted.
On February 10, Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Jam Kamal had said that 1.2 million trees would be planted across the province this year.
Speaking to media in Quetta Jam Kamal had said that under a five year project of tree plantation, more than 250 million trees would be planted throughout the province to counter environmental hazards.
He had said that new Forest Act would also be imposed soon to promote reforestation in the province.
The chief minister had urged the people to actively participate in the plantation campaign.
Under PM Imran, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, which came to power this year, pledged to plant billions of trees to tackle the effects of climate change. In 2013, PTI-led KP government introduced a green-growth initiative to tackle deforestation, build more small-scale hydroelectric projects and overhaul national parks.From nurseries to full forest areas, the success of Billion Tree Tsunami has been unprecedented with public & pvt involvement. Billion-tree tsunami is our pride, says PM
Earlier, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khansaid that Billion-tree tsunami was the first environmental project which was being praised in the entire world and the project has been our pride.
Reacting to the criticism of ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on the Billion-tree tsunami project, he said that the attack on the project just because the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) started it was not wise.
Instead of targeting the Billion-tree tsunami project, we should be worried about forests in Punjab and Sindh, he said.
Khan added that the timber mafia was occupying the forests in Punjab and Sindh and were cutting the trees.
