ISLAMABAD (92 News) – Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on Sunday vowed to restore restore student unions with a “comprehensive and enforceable code of conduct”. The prime minister announced two days after the Student Solidarity March held across the country on November 29. He said that his government will restore student union with enforceable code of conduct, learning from the best practices in internationally renowned universities. “We will establish a comprehensive & enforceable code of conduct, learning from the best practices in internationally renowned universities, so that we can restore & enable student unions to play their part in positively grooming our youth as future leaders of the country,” PM Khan tweeted. In another tweet, the premier mentioned, “Universities groom future leaders of the country and student unions form an integral part of this grooming. Unfortunately, in Pakistan universities’ student unions became violent battlegrounds and completely destroyed the intellectual atmosphere on campuses. On Friday, students took out protest rallies and staged demonstrations against a ban on unions across the country. Rallies were taken out in Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar and Lahore. In Islamabad, students gathered outside National Press Club and chanted slogans in favor of their demands, including an end to political interference, a reduction in fees and activation of policies regarding harassment of women. In Lahore, a large number of students from Punjab University participated in the Students Solidarity March and raised slogans against university administration. They demanded that a ban on the student unions should be ended across the country.
