Police declare knife incident an attempt to attack Mufti Taqi Usmani

KARACHI (92 News) – Police have declared the knife recovery incident an attempt to attack Mufti Taqi Usmani at Jamia Darul Aloom on Thursday.

In a statement, the police said that the accused had attempted to murder Mufti Taqi Usmani after the Fajr prayers. "Mufti Taqi Usmani was meeting people when a suspect reached there. During a search, a knife was recovered from the suspect," the statement said.

It added that the accused was identified as Asim Laiq, a resident of Gulistan-e-Johar.

Earlier, a knife-carrying man was arrested from Jamia Darul Aloom after the Fajr prayers. In his preliminary statement, the suspect said his two marriages had failed and he had come for prayer by Mufti Taqi Usmani. "I had brought out a knife and chocolate to give Mufti Sahib as gift."

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed phoned Mufti Taqi Usmani and sought details about the incident.
