Power crisis in Karachi: Committee holds K-Electric responsible

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority Fact Finding Committee has held K-Electric responsible for prolonged and unannounced loadshedding in Karachi. The committee will present its report to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif tomorrow during his Karachi visit. Earlier, a team of NEPRA officials arrived in Karachi to investigate power crisis in the city on the directions of the prime minister. The committee completed its report in two days. According to the agreement, K-Electric had to invest US $360 million but failed to increase power generation after privatization. On the other hand, the demand continued to increase. The committee said in its report that K-Electric not only failed to increase power generation but also failed to reduce line losses. “K-Electric failed to improve transmission system.” “The K-Electeric continued to receive 600 megawatts of electricity from federal government and kept its power plants close,” the committee said. The committee also mentioned in its report that action should be taken against K-Electric for failing to work on agreement terms.
