Power minister vows to provide cheap electricity to consumers

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – Power Minister Omar Ayub Khan has expressed government’s commitment to provide cheap electricity to consumers. Speaking to the floor of National Assembly, the minister said that about 8,000 megawatts will be generated through solar and wind energy projects by 2025 at a rate of less than 6.5 rupees per unit. The power minister said while responding to a Call Attention notice regarding charging of fuel surcharge in electricity bills from the people of Malakand region despite the generation of electricity through four power Houses in the area. Omar Ayub Khan said we are pursuing a policy to generate 70 to 80 percent of energy from domestic resources to provide cheap electricity to consumers. He said the government is following an equitable distribution of resources, including energy, among all parts of the country.  He said we have allocated 54 billion rupees in the budget to provide relief to those consumers, who use less than 300 units. Earlier, briefing the journalists on cabinet meeting, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan said that MoU Afghanistan and Anti-Narcotics agenda also approved in the meeting, however, the matters regarding Jinnah Airport and Local Government Commission has been delayed. During the federal cabinet, the briefing was given about hoarding of the flour and hike in the prices of electricity and gas. The special assistant said that the meeting took stock of fifteen-month performance of the government.

“It also considered the relief measures to public, public interest legislation and various initiatives of the government including subsidy in prices of gas and electricity during the cabinet meeting,” Firdous Ashiq Awan mentioned.

She termed that the meeting has deliberated on various suggestions to remove obstacles to provide maximum relief to people as envisioned by Prime Minister Imran Khan.
