PPP Jiyala Murtaza Wahab elected as Karachi mayor

KARACHI (92 News) - PPP Jiyala Murtaza Wahab was elected as the Karachi mayor in the one-on-one contest against Jamaat-e-Islami's Hafiz Naeemur Rehman on Thursday.

Murtaza Wahab, who was backed by the PPP and allies, bagged 173 while his rival Hiafiz Naeemur Rehman, who enjoyed the support of the Mustafa Kamal and others, secured 160 votes. The members voted in favour of their candidates through the show of hand.

The Election Commission of Pakistan will announce the final results shortly. However, 30 estranged members of the PTI did not vote for any candidate.

Three members, including Firdous Shamim, were brought to the venue by armoured vehicle.

PPP's Salman Abdullah and JI's Saifuddin advocate are contesting for the slot of the Karachi deputy mayor.

Meanwhile, PPPP president Asif Zardari has congratulated Murtaza Wahab on his victory, saying it is an outcome of the hard work of the workers. He asked the Karachi mayor to serve the people without any delay.
