General Asim Munir will assume the office as COAS on November 29, while General Sahir Shamshad Mirza will assume his office as CJCSC on November 27.

Prior to their appointments in their respective positions, the president promoted both officers to the rank of General as earlier they had been serving as Lieutenant Generals.

“President Dr Arif Alvi has promoted Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza HI(M) to the rank of General with immediate effect and appointed him as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee with effect from 27th November 2022,” a President House press release said.

“The President promoted Lieutenant General Syed Asim Munir HI(M) to the rank of General with immediate effect and appointed him as Chief of Army Staff with effect from 29th November 2022,” it said.

President Alvi made the said promotions and appointments under Article 243(4) (a)&(b) and Article 48(1) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan read with Sections 8-A and 8-D of the Pakistan Army Act 1952.

In this regard, he has signed the summary received in his office earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, CJCSC General Sahir Shamshad Mirza called on President Arif Alvi at President House. He thanked President Arif Alvi for his appointment. The CJCSC reiterated his resolve to further improve the professional capabilities of the Pak Army.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had appointed General Asim Munir as the Chief of Army Staff and Gen Sahir Shamshad as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had sent the advice to President Dr Arif Alvi. The President accorded the approval to the PM advice under Article 243. After the approval of President Dr Arif Alvi, a notification regarding appointment of the COAS and the CJCSC will be issued.

Keeping in view the possible delay in the approval of the summary regarding appointment of the COAS and the CJCSC, the government had frozen the retirement of General Asim Munir. Under the Army Act, General Asim Munir was retained even after 25 days of the appointment. On the other hand, the federal cabinet had approved the appointments.
