President, PM reiterate government’s resolve to protect rights of workers

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – On the eve of Labour Day, President Dr Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday reiterated the government commitment to effectively protect the rights of workers to help them meet emerging challenges of globalization. In his message, the president said that the government will do its utmost to ameliorate and improve the socio-economic conditions of workers. He said that this day is not only a reminder of the struggle of workers but also an acknowledgement of their importance for national growth and progress. In his message, the prime minister said that the labour day also affords us an opportunity to recognize the valuable contribution being made by the workers. The premier said that the dividends of inclusive economic growth cannot be realized if the workers are deprived of their due rights and opportunities. He said workers are our partners in growth and development. Imrna khan said government is endeavoring to strengthen the labour market and have a plan to create 10 million jobs over five years in key sectors like housing, SMEs, health, education, green economy and tourism. PM Khan, in his message, felicitating the workers invited to become partner of the government in realizing Naya Pakistan.
International Labour Day being observed today
International Labour Day is being observed today with the renewed pledge to acknowledge and promote the dignity of labourers.

The theme of this year Labour Day is “Uniting Workers for Social and Economic Advancement”. International Labour Day observed in the memory of massacre of labourers who laid their lives in 1886 in Chicago while protecting the rights of labourers.

Today is a gazetted holiday, labour and traders organizations have chalked out special programmes to highlight the significance of the day. Pakistan’s first labor policy was devised in 1972, in which May 1 was declared an official holiday. Pakistan has been member of the ILO since independence in 1947. Pakistan has ratified 36 ILO conventions.
