ISLAMABAD (92 News) - The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday filed a constitutional petition, challenging the Elections (Second Amendment) Act, 2024.

The petition filed by PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali requested the court to annul the Elections (Second Amendment) Act, 2024. It appealed to court to stop the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) from allotting the reserved seats to other parties.

It asked the court to allot the seats reserved for women and minorities to the PTI.

PTI leader Umar Ayub said that the Elections (Second Amendment) Act, 2024 was a cheap tactic to stop the passage of the PTI. “No dialogues are being held with anyone. Pakistan has the power to hold the new elections. Hasina Wajid has fled to India. Where will Shehbaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and other people go?” he maintained.

On the other hand, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court regarding the verdict on the reserved seats.

The commission, in the petition, requested the court to withdraw the July 12 judgment. It also contended that the ECP had not wrongly interpreted any legal or judicial judgment. “The ECP implemented the judgment in letter and spirit. It implemented the judgment with regard to 39 members. The PTI was not a party in the case. The SC cannot interfere in the Article 218 of the Constitution,” it contended.

The ECP has made the Sunni Ittehad Council, it chief Hamid Raza and others as party in the petition.
