Punjab governor rejects notification of UET for gender segregation

LAHORE (92 News) – The Punjab governor on Monday declared a notification – issued by the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) in Lahore for gender segregation at university cafeteria – as null and void. It is pertinent to mention here that the UET ordered to the establishment of separate sitting arrangements for male and female students at university cafeteria and banned to sit together. The Punjab governor took notice of the matter after uproar in the social media by the students. He rejected the university’s notification and directed to establish three-member committee to investigate the matter. Earlier, a notification issued by the UET in Lahore ordering the establishment of separate sitting arrangements for male and female students. According to a notification signed by the deputy registrar at UET Lahore and shared widely on social networking website Twitter, the university has directed the university administration to make separate sitting arrangements for male and female students. ”Vice Chancellor has ordered that separate sitting arrangements with suitable partition be made for male and female students with immediate effect,” the notification stated. “In this regard, necessary measures should be taken forthwith. The Vice Chancellor will make surprise visits to check these arrangements,” the notification warns. According to the document, the cafeteria and the canteen at the university would be sealed if separate seating arrangements were not made in compliance of the order.
