It’s our responsibility to protect basic rights under public interest: CJP

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar has said that it is responsibility of the court to protect the basic rights under the public interest. Addressing a meeting of the National Judicial (Policy-Making) Committee on Saturday, he said that the justice is what is seen to be done. He said the court would not allow democracy to be derailed. “The parliament is supreme, but the constitution is above the parliament,” he maintained. He said that the judiciary is the most important pillar of the state. The chief justice said that the Supreme Court judges had a duty to uphold the Constitution. He said they would not leave any stone unturned to ensure respect for the courts. The chief justice asked rhetorically who was responsible for judicial reforms? He said the courts had to dispense justice according to the laws in force at the time. He said the Supreme Court could always take suo motu notice in defence of citizens' rights. Saqib Nisar told judges they had to hold big guns accountable. He said if the country had good leaders the progress would be unstoppable.
