Ruckus in NA as opposition demands PM to resign

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – Ruckus and sloganeering erupted in the National Assembly session on Friday, as soon as the opposition demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif following the Supreme Court’s judgment on the Panama Leaks case.

The National Assembly session started under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker Murtaza Javaid Abbasi.

Addressing on the floor of the House, Opposition leader Syed Khurshid Shah said that the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) is nothing but a drama, adding that the employees cannot investigate its employer.

He said that the absence of the leader of the house is not constitutionally and legally right.

The PPP leader further demanded Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign on moral grounds after which the slogans of “Go Nawaz Go” broke out in the House.

The opposition lawmakers gathered in front of the Speaker's podium and started raising anti-government slogans and also tore agenda copies during their protest.

Earlier, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif got a temporary breather from the Supreme Court on Thursday that said there was ‘insufficient evidence’ to remove him from office but ordered setting up of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe graft allegations against his family based on the Panama Papers.

The judgment also ordered Sharif and his sons, Hassan and Hussain, to appear before the JIT. The decision was celebrated by the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), as it removed, for the time being, the fear of PM's removal from office.

The main opposition parties, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), however, called Sharif to resign, claiming that he was left with no moral authority to stay as PM until the completion of investigation.

Following the protest, Deputy Speaker adjourned the session till unspecified date.
