SC rejects Nawaz Sharif’s review petition for bail extension

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday rejected former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s review petition seeking extension in the bail. A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and also comprising Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and Justice Yahya Afridi heard the case. During the hearing, Sharif’s consul Khawaja Haris said his client can’t apply for bail before surrendering himself to the authorities. To reply, Justice Sajjad Ali said that whatever said prior to signing the order was just an observation. The lawyer asked the court to extend the bail for eight more weeks as the only option available for his client is to be checked by the same doctors who were treating him earlier in London. The chief justice remarked that Nawaz’s health has deteriorated after going on bail. However, the bail of former prime minister will expire on May 7.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s review petition for an extension in bail on medical grounds, will be heard by the Supreme Court on May 3 (Friday). A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Asif Saeed Khosa will hear the petition which was filed earlier today by the former prime minister. Nawaz had filed the review petition in the apex court, on the Supreme Court’s decision made on March 26, seeking an extension in his bail which will expire on May 7. The petition sought an extension in Nawaz’s bail until a decision on the review petition. Nawaz Sharif’s bail is set to expire on May 7. Nawaz had been serving his jail term since December of 2018 in the Al Azizia corruption reference as per the verdict by the Supreme Court in 2017. The former premier was found guilty in the Al Azizia Steel Mills reference and was sentenced for seven years imprisonment by an accountability court.
SC grants bail to Nawaz Sharif on medical grounds for six weeks
Earlier on March 26, the Supreme Court granted bail to former premier Nawaz Sharif on medical grounds for six weeks in the Al-Azizia reference.

In addition, the court also suspended the sentence for six weeks. The court also stopped Nawaz Sharif from going abroad. However, he will be free to get treatment from anywhere in the country.

The court also ordered to release him after furnishing two surety bonds worth Rs five million each. The bail has been granted on five grounds.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa heard the plea. Other judges in the bench included Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah. Khawaja Haris, counsel for Nawaz Sharif, gave the reference of the letter written by Dr Lawrence. The CJ questioned the legal status of the letter. He stated that they had filed the application for suspension of sentence on medical grounds after the condition of his client deteriorated. He said that five medical boards had reviewed the condition of Nawaz Sharif and each medical board had recommended his shifting to hospital. “Nawaz Sharif needs to undergo angiography. According to doctors, angiography of Nawaz Sharif is a complex matter. The kidney disease has complicated the angiography of Nawaz Sharif who is also suffering from hypertension, heart, kidney and sugar diseases,” he stated. Khawaja Haris appealed to the court to grant bail to his client for eight weeks. “Nawaz Sharif’s name is on the ECL and he will go nowhere,” he said.
