Senate adopts Electoral Reforms Bill

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – After the National Assembly, the Senate also adopted the Electoral Reform Bill on Friday, paving the way for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to become the party president. Law Minister Zahid Hamid presented the Electoral Reforms Bill. Difference appeared between Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani and Zahid Hamid over section 60 of the bill. The Senate chairman said that an amendment cannot be made to another amendment, while the minister was of the view that the amendment can be made. Later, voting was held in the House and the members rejected the opinion of Raza Rabbani. At this, the Senate chairman returned to his chamber. After the Friday prayers, Presiding Officer Muzaffar Hussain Shah presided over the session. Opposition Leader in the Senate Aitezaz Ahsan presented an amendment to the section 203 of the Bill, demanding that a disqualified person cannot become the party chief. Voting was held on his amendment which was rejected by one vote (38-37). Later, the House adopted the Electoral Reforms Bill by reviewing other sections.
