Sharif's Avenfield conviction: LHC bench dissolved after judge's recusal

LAHORE (92 News) – The bench of Lahore High Court (LHC), hearing a petition against the Sharif family’s conviction in the Avenfield properties corruption reference, on Wednesday dissolved as a judge recused himself from the bench. LHC Justice Shams Mehmood Mirza, who headed a three-member bench constituted on August 4 to hear senior lawyer AK Dogar’s plea seeking annulment of the punishment given to the Sharifs in the Avenfield reference, recused himself citing personal reasons. The petition stated that the NAB law was no longer in effect and therefore the trial against Nawaz was illegal. The other members of the bench are Justice Muhammad Sajid Mehmood Siddiqui and Justice Mujahid Mustaqeem Ahmed. Earlieron August 4, the LHC chief justice formed a full bench to hear a plea against Sharif family’s conviction in Avenfield properties corruption reference. The LHC chief justice constituted a full bench comprising Justice Shams Mehmood Mirza, Justice Sajid Mehmood Sethi and Justice Mujahid Mustaqeem. Earlier on July 6, the NAB court Judge Bashir Ahmed sentenced Nawaz Sharif to 10 years and Maryam Nawaz seven-year jail term in the Avenfield reference case. The court also fined Nawaz Sharif eight million pounds and Maryam Nawaz two million pounds.
