ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Tuesday elected Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He was elected PML-N president unopposed as no other candidate submitted documents for the party presidency. On the other hand, workers of the ruling PML-N broke glass in Convention Center, while several party activists also injured. Earlier, the ruling party had elected Shehbaz Sharif as the party’s acting president during its meeting on February 27 taking over from his brother Nawaz Sharif who was disqualified by the Supreme Court. Shehbaz Sharif’s name as the party’s acting president was nominated by his brother and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. The CWC also appointed Nawaz Sharif as lifetime ‘Quaid’ (leader) of the party. Shehbaz Sharif, was born in 1951. He is a graduate of Government College, Lahore and was elected president of Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry in 1985. He belongs to a business family and is the brother of three-time elected Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif. His political careers that spans over four decades began in 1988 when he was first elected to Punjab Assembly. Later, he was elected to the National Assembly in 1990. In 1997, he became Member of Punjab Assembly for the third time and also elected as Chief Minister. After the 1999 military coup, Shehbaz Sharif spent years of self-exile in Saudi Arabia, finally returning home in 2007. Shehbaz was appointed as a CM for a second term after the PML-N’s victory in the province in the 2008 general elections. After May 2013 election, Shehbaz was elected to the post a record 3rd time making him Punjab’s longest-serving chief ministers. During his tenure, he focused on health, education, agriculture and industrial sectors and initiated several development projects in Lahore. Shehbaz is best known for his strong and efficient administration. He is also an arch-rival of Pakistan People’s Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari. He married his cousin, Nusrat Shehbaz in 1973 and had two sons, Salman and Hamza, and two daughters Javeria and Rabia. In 2003, Sharif got married in 2003 to Tehmina Durrani, Pakistani women’s rights activist and author of the book ‘My Feudal Lord.’
