Shehbaz Sharif records his statement before Model Town JIT

LAHORE (92 News) – Leader of Opposition in National Assembly and former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif recorded his statement on Monday before a new joint investigation team (JIT) in the Model Town case. The opposition leader appeared before the Model Town new JIT team. The probe team interrogated Shehbaz Sharif about the Model Town incident. The JIT team had recently rejected a plea of the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) president seeking to record his statement without appearing before the JIT and summoned him in person. Meanwhile, Shehbaz Sharif appeared before the JIT members here at the Child Protection Bureau today.
JIT to record Nawaz Sharif’s statement
The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) will interrogate former premier Nawaz Sharif in the Model Town tragedy. On Saturday, the provincial home department of Punjab permitted the JIT to proceed with the investigation into the case. The JIT members, led by the JIT head AD Khwaja, will record the statements of the former PM at the Kot Lakhpat jail. Besides, the investigation team has already recorded the statements of various PML-N leaders in the case. PML-N leaders Pervez Rasheed, Khawaja Asif and Rana Sanaullah were already appeared before the investigation team of Model Town carnage to record their statements.
Model Town tragedy: IG Motorways AD Khawaja appointed JIT head
On Jan 3, the Punjab Home Department has appointed Inspector General of National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) AD Khawaja as the head of the joint investigation team (JIT) to probe into the Model Town tragedy.
He has also served as IGP Sindh AD Khawaja. The JIT includes ISI representative Lt Col Muhammad Attique-uz-Zaman and MI representative Lt Col Irfan Mirza, IB Deputy Director General Muhammad Ahmed Kamal and DIG Headquarters Gilgit-Baltistan Qamar Raza. Home Department Additional Secretary Fazeel Asghar said that the JIT would investigate the matters pertaining to the Model Town tragedy. According to the report of Justice Baqir Najfi, police never confirmed who gave them orders to open straight fire on the workers of PAT. But, now, the former IG of Punjab Police Mushtaq Sukhera has confirmed that Rana Sanaullah gave me orders for direct fire on the public in Model Town. On October 6, the Supreme Court had taken notice of plea by Bisma Amjad, the daughter of Tanzila Amjad who was among those martyred in the Model Town firing incident, seeking the formation of a new investigation team to probe the carnage. On June 17, 2014, at least 14 people were killed and 100 others injured when the police opened fire to disperse protesting Pakistan Awami Tehreek workers during an anti-encroachment operation outside the residence of PAT chief Dr Tahirul Qadri. The report of the first JIT was rejected by the court as there were no statements submitted by the families of the victims.
