RAWALPINDI (92 News) Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has made a passionate plea to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to introduce a new Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise representing his hometown, Rawalpindi.
His suggested name? Pindi Express—a nod to his iconic nickname.
Speaking during a discussion on the ongoing PSL season, Akhtar said Rawalpindi deserves to be in the PSL spotlight, given its rich cricketing heritage and talent pipeline, which has produced players such as Haris Rauf and Mohammad Wasim.
“The city breathes cricket,” said Akhtar. “With the kind of talent Rawalpindi has produced over the years, it’s only fitting that it gets its own PSL team.”
The Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium has already hosted several high-octane PSL clashes, with fast pitches, big scores, and energetic crowds. Akhtar believes it's time the city had a team to match its passion.
With PSL Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer recently hinting at expansion in the league’s 11th season—potentially adding two new franchises—Akhtar’s call could not be timelier.
A Pindi Express team would not only honour Akhtar’s legacy but also bring a thrilling new rivalry to the league—particularly against neighbouring Islamabad United in what fans are already dubbing the Twin City Derby.
