Complete shutdown in IOK on Maqbool Butt’s 35th martyrdom anniversary

SRINAGAR (KMS) – In Occupied Kashmir, a complete shutdown is being observed on Monday to mark the 35th martyrdom anniversary of prominent Hurriyat leader Muhammad Maqbool Butt who was hanged by the Indian authorities in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail on February 11, 1984. Call for the strike has been given by the Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik. On the call of Joint Resistance Leadership, special prayers were held in all main masajid of the territory for martyrs Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afzal Guru. Recalling the sacrifice of martyrs Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afzal Guru, the JRL also called for protest demonstrations at Lal Chowk in Srinagar to press for the return of mortal remains of these martyrs to their motherland for a proper burial. A memorandum will also be sent to the UN secretary general seeking the intervention of the World Body for settlement of the Kashmir dispute. India had hanged Muhammad Maqbool Butt, on February 11, 1984 and Muhammad Afzal Guru on February 9, 2013 for their role in Kashmir freedom movement. The JRL said that the struggle and sacrifices rendered by great leaders of Kashmiri freedom struggle – martyr Muhammad Maqbool Butt and martyr Muhammad Afazl Guru – were a glorious chapter of Kashmir’s resistance history.
