KARACHI (92 News) - The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association has demanded immediate export of surplus sugar, saying that two million tonnes of sugar is lying surplus in the country.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, PSMA chairman Zaid Zakriya said that the government should allow the mills to export 1.3 million tonnes of sugar lying surplus. "A foreign exchange of US$$1 billion cane be earned through the export of the surplus sugar," he maintained.
He said that the mills produced record sugar of eight million tonnes during the last crushing season. "The country has received 10 percent more sugarcane crop this year. The country is likely to get better crop due to rains," he added.
Zaid Zakriya said that there would be a negative impact on the farmers if surplus sugar was not produced.
He appealed to the prime minister to order the authorities concerned to allow the export of surplus sugar immediately.
