Suspension of Kisan Package: IHC rejects govt’s appeal for stay order
October 8, 2015
ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday rejected a government appeal for a stay order on Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) verdict to suspend government relief package for farmers. The divisional Bench of IHC comprising Justice Noorul Haq Qureshi and Justice Amir Farooq heard a petition filed by the government regarding Kisan package. Attorney-General Salman Aslam Butt appeared in court today on behalf of the government and appealed to the court to suspend ECP’s verdict and issue a stay order in this regard. The Attorney-General said that the farmers had held a protest demonstration in favor of their demands in August, while the leaders of different political parties had also spoke in favor of the farmers demands. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had announced Kissan Package but on September 30, the ECP announced that the prime minister's relief package was a violation of the electoral code. The ECP decided to stop implementation of the package until December 3.
