Total lunar eclipse turns moon 'blood red'

LOS ANGELES – The Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles live streamed video of Saturday's total lunar eclipse, also called a "blood moon". The action began at approximately 3:15am Pacific Time when the edge of the moon entered the amber core of the Earth's shadow. The total phase of the lunar eclipse only lasted about 5 minutes, since the moon skimmed the outskirts of the Earth's shadow, rather than passing centrally through it. Some total eclipses can last for more than an hour. Eclipses occur two or three times per year when the sun, Earth and the full moon line up so that the moon passes through the Earth's shadow. –Reuters
