SRINAGAR (KMS) – Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and the world observed Kashmir Martyrs’ Day on Saturday to reiterate the pledge to continue the mission of their martyrs till the achievement of the inalienable right to self-determination. The day was marked by a complete shutdown in Occupied Kashmir. The occupation authorities imposed restrictions in Srinagar by deploying Indian troops and police personnel in strength to prevent a march towards Naqashband Sahib in Srinagar where the martyrs of 13th July are buried. While the All Parties Hurriyat Chairman Syed Ali Gilani is under house detention since 2010, the authorities also placed the Chairman of Hurriyat forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, under house arrest. The Mirwaiz was scheduled to lead a procession from Srinagar’s historic Jamia Masjid to the Martyrs’ Graveyard at Naqashband Sahib. The Hurriyat forum in a statement denounced the authorities for imposing restrictions in Srinagar and placing the Mirwaiz under house arrest. The authorities also suspended train service in the occupied territory. July 13, 1931 is a watershed moment in the history of Kashmir that marks the beginning of a struggle against tyranny, oppression and despotism. It was on this day in 1931 when the troops of Dogra Maharaja killed 22 Kashmiris, one after the other, outside the Central Jail in Srinagar. They had gathered on the jail premises to attend the court proceedings against one, Abdul Qadeer, who had asked the Kashmiri people to defy the Dogra rule. Hurriyat leaders and organisations including Maulana Abbas Ansari, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi Al-Safvi, Maulana Masroor Abbas, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front and High Court Bar Association of occupied Kashmir in their statements said that 13th July holds a special significance in the history of Jammu and Kashmir as on this day in 1931, the Kashmiris stood up for their rights. The Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Movement organized a function in Rajouri area of Jammu region to eulogize the sacrifices of the martyrs of 13th July. Meanwhile, APHC senior leader and the Chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, in a statement in Srinagar expressed concern over stopping of ambulances on Srinagar-Jammu highway frequently to allow Indian Army or Amarnath yatra convoys to pass first. An 8-year-old student was injured after he was deliberately hit by an Indian Army vehicle in Kunan Gund area of Ganderbal district. In Islamabad, speakers at a conference organized by the APHC-AJK said that the sacrifices being rendered by the people of occupied Kashmir were part of the continuation of the mission of the martyrs of the 13th July, 1931. They appealed to world community to play its role in the settlement of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the Kashmiris’ aspirations for ensuring durable peace in South Asia.
