Trump once again offers mediation over Kashmir issue
WASHINGTON (92 News) – US President Donald Trump has once again offered mediation between Pakistan and India over the Kashmir issue on Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference at White House, the US president said the relationship between Pakistan and India is less heated than it was two weeks ago.
“India and Pakistan are having a conflict over Kashmir as you know. I think [it] is a little bit less heated right now than [what] it was two weeks ago,” Trump said.
“I get along with both countries very well,” Trump said, adding “I am willing to help them if they want. They know that. That [offer] is out there,” he added.
It is worth mentioning here that escalation between Pakistan and India emerged after abrogating Article 370 of the constitution which granted special status to the Indian Occupied Kashmir on August 5.
Trump’s current offer came despite a meeting between Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of G-7 summit in France last month.
During the meeting both the leaders agreed that Kashmir is a bilateral matter between the two countries with no scope for third party mediation.
Earlier, terming Prime Minister Imran Khan as fantastic man, US President Donald Trump once again offered for mediation between Pakistan and India on the Kashmir issue.
Briefing the journalists on Imran Khan’s visit to Washington, a senior State Department official reiterated the US offer to help India and Pakistan resolve the 70-year old dispute, if asked by both.
“Obviously it’s in everyone’s interest to see an improvement in relations between India and Pakistan. And the US president’s offer was made in recognition of that fact,” the official said. He clarified that Trump was ready to assist if the two countries wanted him to.
“It’s really up to Prime Minister Modi to accept the offer,” he said in response to a question about India’s not accepting his initial offer.
