UN Chief welcomes Afghan govt-Taliban agreement to speed up talks

New York (92 News) – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the agreement by the Afghan government and the Taliban to expedite peace talks.

In a press statement, he urged the parties to make good on their commitment to accelerating negotiations and meeting the humanitarian needs of the population. He called upon the international community to unite its efforts in support of the peace process.

Guterres also echoed the joint statement issued by diplomatic missions of 15 countries, NATO and the European Union calling for the end of violence in Afghanistan, a permanent and comprehensive cease-fire and meaningful peace negotiations.
