UN messages must be heard in a clear & effective manner for world peace and stability: Munir Akram

NEW YORK (92 News) - Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Munir Akram has said that the United Nations remains the indispensable foundation of a peaceful and just world and its messages must be heard in a clear and effective manner.

He gave the proposal during the 44th Session of the Group of 77 comprising of developing countries and China at the UN General Assembly's Committee on Information.

"The G77 and China believe that the growing trend of 'fake news' and disinformation on online platforms, including on social media, is exacerbating social discord, competing nationalisms, discrimination and hate speech," he opined.

He said: "We strongly urge the Department of Global Communications (DGC) to intensify its support for the UN system in the fight against disinformation with an increased focus on factual, timely, targeted, clear, accessible, multilingual and science-based information on all platforms."

Munir Akram also stressed the need to pay greater attention to the promotion of sustained economic growth and sustainable development in the coronavirus and conflict-hit countries.
