UN should review lackluster response in deployments of peacekeeping missions: Maleeha
July 27, 2019
NEW YORK (92 News) – The United Nations should review the sluggishness in the deployment of peacekeeping missions, said Pakistan’s Ambassador to UN Dr Maleeha Lodhi. She underscored the need for adequately equipping the UN peacekeepers operating in hot spots around the world with all critical enablers, including air assets and hospitals to help them better achieve their mandates. Speaking at a meeting of the Group of Friends of Troop and Police Contributing Countries that Pakistan co-chairs with Morocco in Washington, Ms Lodhi said better equipping and training of blue helmets has become a matter of extreme importance, especially in life and death situations. The group was established in 2017 at the initiative of Ambassador Lodhi to maintain Pakistan's leadership on this issue. Maleeha said Pakistan is included among the list of those countries who send maximum troops as peacekeepers. She presented a strategy to resolve the challenges the peacekeeping missions are currently facing and asked the UN to improve the level of deployments.
