UNSC meeting on worsening situation in Occupied Kashmir concludes

NEW YORK (92 News) – The UN Security Council (UNSC) meeting held to discuss the serious situation in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IJ&K) concluded in New York on Friday. According to diplomatic sources, the UNSC will discuss the Kashmir dispute under agenda item Pakistan-India question. This is a big success for Kashmir and Pakistan. The debate is happening after five decades. The request to convene the meeting of UNSC on Kashmir was made by Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi. Last time when Jammu and Kashmir found a reference in UNSC resolutions was in 1998 in resolution 1172, after Pakistan conducted nuclear tests. However, the mention under India Pakistan question is after decades. In a major diplomatic breakthrough for Pakistan on an international level, the UNSC has granted the country's request to discuss India’s decision to revoke the special status of occupied Kashmir on Friday. Speaking to reporters UNSC President Joanna Wronecka said, “The UNSC will discuss the Jammu and Kashmir situation behind closed doors most likely on August 16.” When asked about the timing of the meeting, Wronecka said, “Most probably on Friday as the Security Council would not operate on Thursday.” The council has taken up the issue of the critical situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir after almost 50 years. It is pertinent to mention here that Russia has also endorsed the demand of Pakistan. Russian government announced not to oppose summoning session of Modi government’s unilateral and illegal action against Occupied Kashmir. As a permanent member of the UNSC, China supported Pakistan’s call to address the situation surrounding the former state of Jammu and Kashmir, and requested consultations behind closed doors on Thursday or Friday, according to a copy of the request obtained by TASS on Wednesday. "China request the Security Council to hold closed consultations under the agenda "India-Pakistan Question" in the afternoon of 15 Aug or the morning of 16 Aug and invite the DPPA and DPO to brief the Council," the document reads. Earlier this week, Pakistan requested a UN Security Council meeting to discuss the fate of Jammu and Kashmir.
