US diplomat who killed biker is still in Pakistan: Kh Asif
ISLAMABAD (92 News) – Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Wednesday said that the American diplomat who recently hit and killed a motorcyclist in the federal capital, was still in Pakistan.
Speaking on the floor of the Parliament, he said that the US embassy has assured full cooperation in the investigation.
The minister said that action will be taken in accordance with law.
Earlier, a United States Defense Attache had run down two persons in Daman-e-Koh, ratcheting up the ongoing visa/diplomatic rift between the two countries.
Colonel Joseph Emanuel Hall, Defense and Air Attache at the US Embassy, was reportedly sloshed while driving the white Land Cruiser that hit motorcyclists at a traffic signal.
One of the riders was dead, while the others were critically wounded, who were taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
The US official was not arrested owing to his diplomatic immunity, however, the police took custody of the vehicle. The US Embassy officials are following the case with the Islamabad Police.
This is the fourth road accident in recent years in which US diplomats have struck and killed people in Islamabad, the capital city police said, adding that they got away with it because they had diplomatic immunity.
In July 2010, a US embassy officer attached to the embassy’s Force Protection Department, hit and killed a young man driving a motorcycle on the 7th Avenue.
In November 2010, a member of the US Regional Affairs Office hit another embassy’s vehicle causing damage to both vehicles in Islamabad.
In February 2013, an administrative assistant at the US embassy hit two motorcyclists with his Land Cruiser near Kohsar Complex at Margalla Avenue, killing one man and injuring other.
In April 2018, US Defence Attache violated the traffic law resulting in the death of one man and injuring another.
In February 2011, a contractor employed by the U.S. Consulate shot and killed two Pakistanis in Lahore, and struck and killed a bicycle rider as he sped from the scene in his vehicle. The incident drew nationwide condemnation and strained ties between Washington and Islamabad.
