US won’t lose ties with Pakistan, says John Kirby
May 4, 2016
WASHINGTON (92 News) – The US State Department spokesman John Kirby has on Wednesday said that the US will not end its relationship with Pakistan, noting that it is the sovereign decision of Islamabad to take a call on its security needs. Addressing a news briefing in Washington on Wednesday, John Kirby said that these are sovereign decisions that nations make with respect to their defense needs, and it’s up to Pakistan to speak to how they’ll fulfill their defense needs. He said that Pakistan can meet its defense requirements from wherever it wants to and the US will respect Pakistan's decision. “As for the relationship, as I’ve said many times, it’s an important one. It’s critical, it’s vital particularly in that part of the world, and it’s a relationship we have absolutely no intention of losing focus on or diminishing in any way,” Kirby said. US state department spokesperson John Kirby said yesterday (Tuesday) that Pakistan will have to finance the purchase of F-16 fighter jets itself after members of the US Congress objected to the use of government funds to pay for them. He said that congressional opposition meant funds from the US government's Foreign Military Financing allocation could not be used to purchase the aircraft. "Given congressional objections, we have told the Pakistanis that they should put forward national funds for that purpose," he added.
