Victims of 2005 quake remembered on 13th anniversary

MUZAFFARABAD (92 News) – The 13th anniversary of 8th October earthquake is being observed in across Pakistan on Monday (today). On October 8, 2005, Azad Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were jolted by one of the most horrendous earthquakes of the history which took away lives of more than 80 thousand people. As today, the catastrophe of October 8, 2005 marks completion of 13 years, events are being held to mark the 13th anniversary of the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan’s northern areas. Thirteen years before from today on Oct 8, 2005, the 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck at 8:52 in the morning. The earthquake ruined the cities of Khyber Pakhtunkwa. Thousands of people were killed, injured and handicapped in the catastrophe of earthquake. The horrible scenes cannot be forgotten after the 13 years. However, the tremor and aftershocks turned the entire cities including Bagh, Garhi Habibullah, Muzaffarabad cities of Kashmir and Balakot, Mansehra from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa into wreckage. The tragedy left more than three million people homeless. The federal capital city, Islamabad, was also observed the most horrendous earthquakes in the history of 100 years. The apartment’s worth of billion rupees of Margala Towers in F-10 Markaz, posh area of Islamabad, also ruined with hundreds of sleeping people during the earth quake. The earthquake with 7.6 rector scale hit the northern part of the country in the morning of October 8. A total of 1450 projects were approved for the rehabilitation work in the effected areas, out of which four thousand projects are still in pending. In Lahore a walk is being held while a candlelight vigil is being held in Islamabad. An estimated 75,000 people were killed when the 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck on 8 October, 2005. – PM expresses solidarity with 2005 earthquake victims – On the day of remembrance, Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed solidarity with the earthquake victims, saying “We are standing with the victims of 2005 earthquake who lost their beloveds in the disaster.” The prime minister said that the intensity and frequency of natural calamities have increased over the time, the government will utilize all resources to contain the destruction resulted by such tragedies. PM Khan further said that the disaster management requires a functional mechanism a workable global framework is the need of the time to handle natural calamities. “Pakistan has an institution like National Disaster Management which should be more strengthened on district level such institutions,” he added.
